Mission Control: Mars is a co-operative live gaming experience powered by Unreal Engine. Its host-led, narrative-driven, mixed-reality shows turn local cinemas or planetariums into the mission control room of the first human colony on Mars in the year 2034.
Commissioned by the Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of The Arts and the Te Papa Museum, created by Hackman with the collaboration of Liquid Static Studio. Experienced by 30,000 people across 500 live shows.
In my capacity as 3D World Artist, I was mainly tasked with concepting, storyboarding, developing, and animating the Mars landscape and cinematics that play on the 360° projection dome or movie screen.
The immersive terrain was created using heightmap data of Mars from NASA, up-resed, refined, and optimized in Gaea, Houdini, and Unreal. I produced a number of environment and vehicle concept designs and collaborated on high-poly modeling.
I also worked on designing, animating, and implementing the projection screen's UI and VFX, using Blueprints and Niagara FX to achieve real-time responsivity as the audience completes games and puzzles.
